FAQ

FAQs regarding WiFi (Wireless LAN)

Q Which radio frequency does Namikiteru use?
A Namikiteru’s WiFi service utilizes the 2.4GHz band, unlicensed in the US.
Q It is necessary for the customer to prepare the necessary hardware or utilize a PC preinstalled with IEEE802.11b-compatible WiFi equipment.
A Please check if the following sticker appears on your laptop PC. This sticker indicates that the laptop PC is compatible to access the Namikiteru WiFi network.
802.11b/g, Intel centrino(TM), WiFi

In case WiFi/Wireless LAN equipment is not installed on your laptop PC:
Please purchase and utilize a WiFi/Wireless LAN card (look for IEEE802.11b-compatibility. “WiFi, 802.11b/g” can usually be found on the product).

Q What is IEEE802.11b?
A IEEE802.11b is an international standard for data transmitted on the 2.4GHz radio frequency, allowing for the possibility of up to 11Mbps in data communication speeds.
Systems IEEE802.11b IEEE802.11g IEEE802.11a
Standardization System ARIB/MMAC(Japan)
IEEE802.11(US)
2.4GHz Radio Frequency band Various network interference possibilities, including electronic ranges, medical equipment, and limitations with the 5.2GHz (indoor) and 4.9/5.0GHz (outside) frequencies.
Modulation and demodulation DS-SS system and encoding OFDM system
Access control CSMA/CA (decentralized control autonomous)
Radio transmission rate 11Mbps 36Mbps (54Mbps optional)
Zone Guarantee Function RC4/WEP
Q Can you recommend a Wireless LAN (WiFi) card or PC equipped with Wireless LAN capabilities?
A We recommend the purchase of IEEE802.11b-compatible hardware.
* Wi-Fi-->The Wireless LAN “IEEE802.11” set of standards was created by the WiFi Alliance (WECA) to guarantee compatibility among “Wireless Fidelity” equipment.
Q What is the actual connection speed of Namikiteru access points?
A At a maximum throughput of 11Mbps, speeds will vary based on the environment of the connection (distance from access point, building design, number of people accessing network, etc.) but typically yields an effective data transmission rate of 3-4Mbps.
Q What is the range of the radio signal from an access point?
A The radio signal can typically service 200ft from the access point. But, design and environment of the building may reduce this distance significantly.
Q How is the Wireless LAN signal and access secured?
A Namikiteru access points use a combination of User ID & Password certification, WEP-key access and data encoding, and other basic security measures corresponding with the IEEE802.1X standards group.
* IEEE802.1X
Wireless LAN technology standards set enabling the user to change the network key whenever necessary to prevent unauthorized access to the network, protecting the data being transmitted.

*WEP key
Network key for allowing access to protected, encoded Wireless LAN network. Protects transmitted data from third parties trying to access the network.
