As the mobile arm of Japan's leading telecommunications carrier, NTT DoCoMo, Inc. was spun off from its parent company, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), in 1992. The corporate name was officially changed from NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. to NTT DoCoMo, Inc. in April 2000. On November 1, 1999 NTT DoCoMo USA, Inc. was established with its original headquarters located in San Jose, California. As of July 9, 2001, the USA headquarters was officially moved to its current location in New York City. With offices in New York, Washington DC, and a research lab facility in San Jose, California, the main purpose of NTT DoCoMo USA is to strengthen its global competitiveness as it upgrades the services it offers worldwide.
In the United States, DoCoMo USA launched its first service offering with the start of "namikiteru" service on November 1st, 2004. A Public Wireless LAN access service for Japanese-speaking residents in the United States, namikiteru service is the first step for DoCoMo USA to bring multimedia offerings to the U.S. and deliver meaningful content to consumers.
